Yasmin Lavik - Changing Trees

Yasmin Lavik is a photographer and artist working predominantly with memory. Her practice is process-led and embraces unpredictability through analogue experimentation, alternative processes, and a willingness to work with whatever emerges. She aims to open conversations around sensitive topics: grief, chronic illness, and the ways they intertwine.

I made this body of work, Changing Trees, during a period when confronting childhood neglect triggered a major flare in my chronic illnesses: endometriosis and PMOS. As my body slowed down, so did my working method. Rest became part of the process. Experimentation with Polaroid, emulsion lifts, and chemical manipulation replaced the pursuit of perfection.

The title refers to the trees I would lie under for comfort as a child. Moving frequently meant those trees were always changing, from palm to elm, willow to oak. They became transient anchors, much like memory itself. This work does not offer a resolution. It documents a non-linear journey through loss, shame, and the small moments of peace that make endurance possible.
